Most popular Lt. Governor of A&N Islands, Vakkom Purushothaman no more

Port Blair, Aug 02: The Veteran Congress leader, former Mizoram Governor and the most popular Lieutenant Governor of Andaman & Nicobar Islands, Vakkom Purushothaman, passed away at his residence in Thiruvananthapuram on July 31, 2023 following age-related illnesses. He was 96.

Purushothaman served as the 6th Lieutenant Governor of the Andaman and Nicobar Islands from 1993 to 1996.

In a tenure just about half of that of the incumbent Lieutenant Governor of A&N Islands, Vakkom Purushothaman has been credited for a number of developmental initiatives taken up in Andaman & Nicobar Islands so much so that he continues to be remembered fondly by the Islanders of A&N Islands.

There was an uproarious demand across the Islands to bring him back as the Lieutenant Governor of these Islands after the 2004 tsunami.

"Shri Vakkom Purushothaman was committed to the welfare of the people, growth and progress of the Islands. He was an able Administrator, reformer and a revered senior citizen. The people of the Islands will always remember Shri Vakkom Purushothaman for his affection for the Islanders," said the Lt. Governor of A&N Islands, Admiral (Retd) DK Joshi conveying his "deepest sympathy, sorrow and heartfelt condolence to the members of the bereaved family" in an official communique received from the A&N Administration.

The Member of Parliament, A&N Islands, Kuldeep Rai Sharma, President of ANTCC, Rangalal Halder, ANTCC Campaign Committee Chairman Shri TSG Bhasker along with all members of the Congress Party A&N State Organizing Committee of CPI (M) among others have condoled the demise of Vakkom Purushothaman.

- K Yadagiri Rao Sri Vijaya Puram, Nov 27: It was a significant achievement in our nationís fight against the ongoing illegal drug trade with the seizure of the huge quantity of illegal drugs by Indian Coast Guard (ICG) of Andaman Nicobar Command in Andaman Seas creating history in the maritime domain in India. Based on an input, Andaman Nicobar Command took an operation on Nov. 25 and apprehended a Myanmarese Fishing boat named "Soe Wai Yan Htoo" in Andaman seas which was carrying approx. 6000 kgs of prohibited drug Methamphetamine.
